Long chain alkanes (paraffins) are converted into sulfonyl chlorides (sulfonation takes place in the middle of the chain) which are then hydrolysed by sodium hydroxide to the corresponding sec alkyl sulfonic acid sodium salts.

Mercury vapour lamps are used.
