Under catalytic cracking conditions, linear alkanes are cycloreduced to cycloalkanes which react with more alkenes to give aromatic compounds and alkanes: methylcyclohexane gives toluene.

The reaction proceeds via a carbocation mechanism and is shape selective in that different zeolites (with different pore sizes and shapes) give different product ratios.
