When a little dilute ammonia is added to a solution of green hexaaquairon(II) ion, the complex cation acts as a Brønsted acid and loses two protons giving a precipitate of green tetraaquadihydroxyiron(II) and two ammonium ions.

On standing in air the green ppt. turns brown.
