The green, mixed ligand, dichlorotetraaquachromium(III) ion reacts with granulated zinc and aqueous hydrochloric acid to give a solution of hexaaquachromium(II) ion which is blue.

Air must be kept out of the reaction or the blue Cr(II) will be oxidised back to green Cr(III)
