The blue solution of pentaaquaoxovanadium(IV) ion reacts with granulated zinc and dilute hydrochloric acid to give a green solution of tetraaquadichlorovanadium(III) ion

If the reaction is performed with dilute sulfuric acid a dull blue grey solution of hexaaquavanadium(III) ion will form.
