Potassium benzoate can be disproportinated to the potassium salt of terephthalic acid and benzene. The reaction is carried out in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Cd/Zn benzoate catalysts are employed.

After neutralisation with acid, terephthalic acid is obtained.

This is known as the Henkel II process.
