beta-Propiolactone is converted to acrylic acid using phosphoric acid and copper powder. If an alcohol is present the corresponding ester is formed. This process is no longer used industrially.
The reaction is an internal elimination resulting in ring opening and so overall is a rearrangement.Industrial Organic Chemistry, 3rd. Ed. K. Weissermel, H.-J. Arpe, VCH (1997)
