Gas oil and heavy distillate can be treated (selective adsorption onto zeolites, urea crystallisation, etc) to give linear alkanes. These can be thermally cracked to long chain alpha-olefins.
alpha-Olefins prepared by thermal cracking are of lower quality than preparation by Ziegler oligomerization, but they are cheaper.Industrial Organic Chemistry, 3rd. Ed. K. Weissermel, H.-J. Arpe, VCH (1997)
