Chlorine will oxidise iodide ion to iodine.

This is a useful analytical test. A suspect iodide salt is added to chlorine water plus a small volume of carbon tetrachloride. The liberated iodine concentrates in the organic layer giving a purple colouration.

In water, iodine forms a brown solution and/or gives a black ppt.
