Catalytic cracking involves breaking longer chain linear alkanes into shorter branched alkanes, cycloalkanes ("naphthene") and a mixture of aromatics. The process is usually optimised to produce gasoline. Shape selective zeolite catalysts are used. At the 450-550°C cracking temperatures long linear alkanes are thermodynamically unstable with respect to shorter and branced alkanes (and even C + H2, coke deposits on the catalyst).
