Buffer (AS/A2 generic) |

Belongs to a sub-set of generics specific to the British A-Level exam system. A buffer solution is able to oppose changes in pH. When small amounts of acid or base are added, or when diluted with water, a buffer is able to maintain its pH. An acidic buffer maintains a solution at a pH below 7 (and typically consists of a weak acid and one of its salts), a basic buffer maintains a solution at a pH above 7 (and typically consists of weak base and one of its salts).
