Under catalytic cracking conditions, cycloalkanes react with alkenes to give aromatic compounds and alkanes: methylcyclohexane gives toluene.The reaction proceeds via a carbocation mechanism and is shape selective in that different zeolites (with different pore sizes and shapes) give different product ratios.
