When a primary alcohol is added to a refluxing aqueous solution of a strong oxidising agent, such as potassium dichromate(VI), and the product is immediately distilled off, the aldehyde is obtained.

If the product is not removed at once, the aldehyde will be oxidised to the carboxylic acid.
