The orange-yellow solution of dioxovanadium(V) ion reacts with 1.5 mol eq. of granulated zinc and aqueous acid to give a violet solution of hexaaquavanadium(II) ion.

Air must be excluded to get all the way to the +2 oxidation state.

A mineral acid such as dilute sulfuric acid should be used. Nitric acid is not suitable.
