In the contact process for oxidising sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide a vanadium(V) oxide catalyst is employed.

The vanadium(V) oxidises the sulfur, and is itself reduced to V(IV).

Oxygen subsequently oxidises the V from (IV) to (V).
