When a little dilute ammonia solution is added to a colourless solution of hexaaquaaluminium ion, the complex cation acts as a Brønsted acid and loses three protons giving a gelatinous white precipitate of the neutral complex triaaquatrihydroxyaluminium, and three ammonium ions.
