When excess dilute hydroxide is added to a solution of blue hexaaquacoper(II) ion, the complex cation acts as a Brønsted acid and loses two protons giving a precipitate of blue tetraaquadihydroxycopper(II) and two waters. The additional hydroxides are not used.
