When excess dilute hydroxide is added to a solution of green hexaaquairon(II) ion, a precipitate of green tetraaquadihydroxyiron(II), a neutral complex is formed. (Only two moles of hydroxide are utilised.)

On standing in air the green ppt. turns brown.
