Dimethyldichlorosilane is polymerised to silicone polymer by water. Note that some chlorotrimethylsilane is required to "end cap" the polymer chain or cyclic or hydroxy terminated product is formed.

The reaction can either be carried out in 25% aqueous HCl or in the gas phase.
