Chlorine will oxidise bromide ion to bromine.

This reaction is used to liberate bromine from brine prepared from concentated sea water. Chlorine is added to the brine and the liberated bromine removed with a stream of air.

Sea water is alkaline and has be be acidified to stop the bromine generated reacting with hydroxide ion. For this reason the reaction is operated at pH 3.5.
