Redox
The concepts of "oxidation" and "reduction" imply that a reagent species "acts upon" a defined substrate species.

However in reality, for every oxidation there must be a concurrent reduction and vice versa. Hence the term "REDOX".

For more information look in the Chemogenesis webbook sections on redox chemistry and substitution, transfer, abstraction, displacement (STAD).
