Heam is an iron(II) porphyrin complex found in the oxygen carrying protein, hemoglobin. In the protein the iron has a coordination number of six and is octahedral. The ÔfifthÕ ligand is an aminoacid nitrogen, and the sixth ligand is oxygen, O2, or water. Carbon monoxide also complexes.
