Gram formula weight (molecular mass) = 233.38 Melting point = 1350 °C Density = 4.5 g/cm3 Purity = 99.99 % Solubility in water = 2.240e-4 g/100mL Solubility in organics = insoluble Very insoluble material. Barium sulfate is also very dense with respect to x-ray penetration and is used as a barium meal before x-ray examinations of the gut. (The insolubility is important because soluble barium salts are toxic.)
